Lake Ossiach is a lake in the Austrian state of Carinthia. It is the state's third largest lake, superseded only by Lake Wörth and Lake Millstatt.Add Ossiacher See and other attractions to your Ossiach trip itinerary using our Ossiach sightseeing planner.
It is situated in the southern Nock Mountains range of the Gurktal Alps along the road from Villach to Feldkirchen, at a height of 501m AA. It reaches a maximum depth of 52.6m, the surface area is about 10.8km2.
Ossiacher See is a dimictic lake with mixing periods in spring and in late autumn. In summer the waters reach 28 °C at the surface. Several uninhabited parts of the shore are protected as natural reserves. The main inflow is the Tiebel creek in the eastern bay, where the Bleistatt mire is currently re-naturalised. The lake empties via the Seebach stream to the Drava river.
There are five main villages surrounding the lake, all of them mainly dependent on summer tourism: Annenheim and Sattendorf, both parts of the Treffen municipality, Bodensdorf and Steindorf, all located on the northern shore, as well as Ossiach with Ossiach Abbey, after which the lake is named. The Gerlitzen mountain on the northern shore rises up to 1909m, offering panoramic views over the surrounding ranges. From Annenheim, the Kanzelhöhe subpeak can be reached by cable car, built in 1928 by the Bleichert engineering company.
Ossiacher See Reviews
End of September is very calm here, most of the tourists back at home. The Ossiach lake was a great stop on the half way back to Czech Republic. If you have a bike, don't miss riding around the lake..... more »
A fantastic time to visit this area./ The snow was deep and crisp under foot and to see large parts of the lake freezing was fantastic. Difficult to get to the lake in places but a gorgeous view from.... more »
Very beautiful and clean.Nice people.Holidays with mountains and lakes. There are many things to do here.I also recommend camping.
Nice, warm and clean lake with a pretty view. There are not many public lake entries. Thus, I’d recommend picking a hotel with a “private beach”. In the area of Alt-Ossiach it wasn’t possible to walk next to the lake as there are many private properties. Hotel and restaurants are rather expensive for what you get (mediocre quality). I’d suggest renting a boat for discovering the lake. There’s also a bike rental place called “bike point”. For hiking and an awesome view you should visit the Gerlitzen which is located next to the lake (10 min drive from Alt-Ossiach). [stayed 1 night]
