Wiener Riesenrad, a landmark on the Vienna skyline, is one of the earliest Ferris wheels ever built. The nearly 65 m (212 ft) tall Ferris wheel opened in 1897 in celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Emperor Franz Josef I. Enter one of the eight original wooden cabins that form the Wheel of History. The tour takes you through 2,000 years of the history of the capital city. Audio impressions and an enormous diorama tell the stories of the Prater, which brings a longstanding tradition back to life. Beautiful and romantic. My last ride was in the 90s and I remember enjoying it just as much. A must see more »

Wiener Riesenrad means Vienna Giant Wheel, which most locals will understand, I say this because Ferris Wheel does not translate. Anyway get there by Metro on either the red U1 or purple U2 line... more »

I had a few hours to kill while in Vienna for work and this seemed like a good way to get a birds eye view of the city. Alice was good at 12 euros it lasted about 20-30 minutes and offered great changing panoramic views of one side of the city on the way up and the other going down. It was windy afternoon when I did it and all dealt very stable. Would recommend it if you are in the area. Would be great during sunset!

A superb piece of Viennese history, with a place in movie legend as well thanks to such features as The Third Man and The Living Daylights. Even beyond the legacy of this mighty wheel though, there are some incredible views across Vienna - a must see if you're in the neighbourhood! :D
