Established in 1912, Canadian Museum of Nature occupies the grandiose Victoria Memorial Museum Building, described as Scottish Baronial in style and designated as a National Historic Site. Admire the ornate, palace-like building, and explore the exhibit rooms that feature numerous displays about all aspects of natural history. Discover an abundant collection of fossils and dinosaur skeletons, view over 500 taxidermies and dioramas of native wild mammals and birds, and observe an array of rocks and minerals. The marine life exhibit boasts a blue whale skeleton, while the Animalium houses a collection of live insects and arachnids. Canadian Museum of Nature reviews
I have been going to this museum since I was 2. I love the fossil and animal galleries. The special exhibits are also almost always great and it is a fun experience every time that I go. more »
Nestled away at the very end of Metcalfe Street (which meets Wellington) is this hidden gem! And speaking of gems, there's a whole section of them on the third floor! Beautiful architecture and... more »
What a wonderful museum! My husband and I went here to celebrate our New years together. We love going to a variety of events in Ottawa and it's really nice that the city has so many museums. we like to read and spend our time learning about animals, nature and just how wonderful the world is. this museum is perfect for children, of all ages. It's all so wonderful for adults and seniors. There's lots of room to move around in the museum which is good. And there's lots to see as well we spent the whole day here which is wonderful because we definitely utilize the entire day by the end of it we were hungry and ready to go back to the hotel with our wonderful experience. There's tons of animal casts here, insects, underwater creatures, and overall a great gift shop as well. I haven't tried the food here although I would like to at some point. A great museum everyone should see it at least once.
This museum always has great special exhibitions, such as the current live butterfly exhibit and slow animal exhibit (sloths, lizards, etc.). It also offers interesting 3D movies as well as nocturnal adventures (sleepovers among the dinosaurs and other excellent permanent exhibits with mystery challenge games and pumping hit music/lights in the background. Where else in Canada can you get something like this in a castle (sort of). Good fun! The best value is the annual membership packages. Mine is Senior + One, meaning I can take someone of any age as my free guest. There is a good licenced restaurant on site (with vegetarian options), as well as a museum gift shop.
