Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral, Quebec City

Admire Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral, a National Historic Site and the seat of the oldest Catholic archdiocese north of Florida. Twice destroyed by fire, the Neoclassical building has stood in the same spot since 1647. Observe the simple exterior and step inside to see the ornate Baroque decor, including gold leaf, an array of paintings, and colonial-era relics. Take a guided tour of the basilica and the vast crypt, where numerous archbishops and cardinals were laid to rest. • Visited this place briefly and enjoyed seeing the architecture. The artwork and design was well made and I found it good to explore  more »
  • For its brightness and its tones in yellow very original and contrasting with the architecture outside of gray granite buildings

  • Really beautiful church and worth visiting it. It is next to all touristic spots, nice to take a pause and give thanks  more »

  • Beautiful and serene! Located in Old Quebec in the heart of the area. Beautiful and serene. Open to the public without a tour, but I imagine a tour would provide you more history and background information.
  • Wonderful cathedral echoing European sensibilities. Plan on spending time there but be aware of closing times. The day we visited they closed at 3:00 pm.
  • Beautiful church and altar. Good video on Francois Laval. Would like to see more literature on the history of the building.
  • It is magnificent. A must visit cathedral in Old Quebec. It is unfortunate that there is a renovation. But it is still a spiritual place to visit.
  • Basillica open to all. A great place filled with faith, history and culture. Now (July 2017) part of the building is under renovation; but still open to public.

Where to stay in Quebec City

Most accommodations cluster on the west side of the St. Lawrence River, with the city's split-level old town offering the widest range of options and best access to top attractions. Stay in the upper town to be close to the castle and enjoy views over the river. What the lower town lacks in panoramas, it makes up for in historic charm and access to riverside cafes and restaurants. If you want a less-touristy experience, consider the up-and-coming neighborhood of St. Roch, whose cafes, bars, restaurants, and artistic spaces make it an alternative traveler's paradise.
