Trip Planner:   Canada  /  Quebec  /  Quebec City  /  Old Port

Old Port, Quebec City

Explore the historic riverfront complex of Old Port, the oldest port in Canada. The port was once one of the five biggest in the world, with more than 1600 ships a year passing through during its 19th century heyday. Now providing a stop-off point for large cruise ships, the port has been transformed into a lively commercial area with its Victorian architecture housing quaint shops and eateries along cobblestone streets. Stop off for a bite to eat at one of the rustic restaurants as you tour the many small cultural attractions, such as local museums, monuments, and churches dotted around the area. Put Old Port into our Quebec City driving holiday planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Beautiful location, very busy and popular. But this summer, i.e. in the warm months. In winter the landscape changes and everything freezes and turns white, but still have the stigma of a tourist site and very nice to see and visit!

Where to stay in Quebec City

Most accommodations cluster on the west side of the St. Lawrence River, with the city's split-level old town offering the widest range of options and best access to top attractions. Stay in the upper town to be close to the castle and enjoy views over the river. What the lower town lacks in panoramas, it makes up for in historic charm and access to riverside cafes and restaurants. If you want a less-touristy experience, consider the up-and-coming neighborhood of St. Roch, whose cafes, bars, restaurants, and artistic spaces make it an alternative traveler's paradise.
