Trip Planner: South America / Chile / Santiago Metropolitan Region / Santiago / San Francisco Church
The oldest building still surviving from colonial times, San Francisco Church represents a significant landmark in the capital city and one that is hard to distinguish from the city itself. Founded in 1622, the church has survived several earthquakes to remain standing where it is today. There have been some modifications over the years including a Victorian-style bell tower added in the mid-1800s to replace earlier destroyed versions. The church’s cultural and historical significance has earned it World Heritage Site status. Appreciate the beauty of this building’s exterior and visit the adjacent museum containing a significant collection of colonial art. It’s best to bring a guidebook or do some research ahead of time, as there is little explanation of the building at the site itself. Oldest? Church in Santiago. Nicely restored ceilings. On some places you can still see the original wall mortar!
