Ascend to the top of Monserrate, which towers over Bogota. From the summit--3,152 m (10,341 ft) above sea level--enjoy panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscape. A 17th-century church perches atop the mountain, dedicated to El Señor Caído (The Fallen Lord), a name derived from a statue depicting Jesus after he was removed from the cross. Christians have used the site of the church as a place of worship since the 1620s, and it remains a popular destination for pilgrims. Nearby, various restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops provide refreshments and shopping for religious visitors and tourists alike. Get to the top by cable car or funicular, or join those on pilgrimage and make the tough trek on foot. Be wary of overexerting yourself on the mountain, as the high altitude can have adverse effects. The views from above are fine, but I didn't find them spectacular. In addition the price of the funicular/cable to go up and down seemed excessive for prices in Colombia. And the queues to get the tickets out are very large (on Sunday, exaggerated), and poorly organized.
Even though I live in Bogotá ,its has been many years since I visit Monserrate Still a must in Bogota.A beautiful place with a spectacular view of the city. more »
Gorgeous views and delicious food. Don't fall for the trap of the fancy restaurants that are early on - continue walking up past the church until you see a little bazaar. Walk all the way through and you'll find a dozen little restaurants that do delicious food, like ajiaco
Monserrate has some great views! It is really high in altitude, so it is a little difficult to breath. Don't go on your first day in Bogota; let your body adjust to the altitude first!
