Trip Planner: South America / Colombia / Bolivar Department / Cartagena District / Cartagena / Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas
Wander the mighty fortifications of Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, which played a crucial role in protecting gold shipped back to Spain by conquistadors in the New World. Originally completed in 1536 and expanded twice in the 17th and 18th centuries, the complex system of bunkers, batteries, and parapets represents one of the most formidable accomplishments in the history of Spanish military architecture. Walk the walls, explore the maze-like network of tunnels that links the different parts of the fort, and enjoy panoramic views from its highest point. You'll find little written information throughout the castle, so rent an audio guide if you want to learn about its history. I use to live in Cartagena and have visited el Castillo many times. The first time was 24+ years ago where they use to let you see a whole lot more of the castle. What you will find now is worth the..... more »
A hilltop fortress (but just a 5-minute-or-so walk up from the bottom) with a "quite sprawling" area above the ramparts, this is really a site for a "high-ground walk" in I would categorize as... more »
Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is a really cool castle to be able to climb all over and explore. I really enjoyed all of the tunnels and all of the history of the castle and being able to experience it all at once. You can feel all of the years and centuries around you as you walk through it. It is a very impressive structure to see as go around and view the different areas. The views of the city from the top parts of the castle are amazing and you get to see almost everything. This castle is well worth a visit.
Had a great time exploring the castle. The tunnels were fascinating. One of them had no lights and was extremely dark. I had to turn around without a flashlight. No cell service and my phone was about to die! I would have loved to continue further down, but I saw a lot. The views from the top were beautiful.
