Trip Planner: South America / Colombia / Bolivar Department / Cartagena District / Cartagena / Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas
Wander the mighty fortifications of Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, which played a crucial role in protecting gold shipped back to Spain by conquistadors in the New World. Originally completed in 1536 and expanded twice in the 17th and 18th centuries, the complex system of bunkers, batteries, and parapets represents one of the most formidable accomplishments in the history of Spanish military architecture. Walk the walls, explore the maze-like network of tunnels that links the different parts of the fort, and enjoy panoramic views from its highest point. You'll find little written information throughout the castle, so rent an audio guide if you want to learn about its history. Love, love, love this attraction. The fee was reasonable. The views are amazing and the place is big enough to wonder around for at least 2 hours. Small gift shop was higher priced but that typical. The dungeons were just spoke enough that I walked a tad faster lol. Bring water to drink as you will get your steps in.
First things first : it's not a castle, it's a fort. It's an outstanding structure and fun to visit. Do yourself a favor and pay for a guided tour. You'll learn a lot and it's way more fun than just walking around on your own.
