Hoyo Soplador, San Andres

#3 of 6 in Nature in San Andres Island
Don't stand too close to Hoyo Soplador, or you might get soaked. The small hole in the ground, located at the southern end of San Andres Island, shoots up incredibly strong jets of water when waves crash into the shore. Due to a series of underground coral formations, the water and air become so pressurized that they are forced straight up, creating the fountain-like phenomenon. • We were touring the island with our mule so we gave it a quick stop. You can park on the side of the road, so you don't need to pay or buy a drink for parking. As soon as you park there are very aggressive touts telling you that it is required to buy a drink to see the hole. This is a lie, it is open to the public. Just keep walking and walk through the many drink shops to get to it. We did start talking with one of the shop owners named Oscar who was not aggressively selling and was very nice. We ended up buying a drink from him. We visited at low tide with almost no wind (or waves) to make the water shoot through. You could still feel the warm air pushed up. It was actually a cool experience because we jumped in the water at the shoreline and swam up under the reef to the bottom of the hole. It was a cool alternative way to experience it.
  • The hole is interesting and you can see the waves crash with the rocky coast is beautiful. However, the people of the island have constructed around the hole and privatized the zone. They only leave 5 meters around the hole to the people stay and they force payment or consume beverage from them.
