Trip Planner: South America / Colombia / Magdalena Department / Santa Marta Municipality / Santa Marta / Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino
Simon Bolivar spent the last two weeks of his life at Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino. A Spanish supporter of Colombia's independence, who at the time produced rum, honey, and sugar on the estate, invited Bolivar to rest at the 17th-century colonial villa before his planned trip to Europe. Today, the estate features several monuments dedicated to Bolivar, including a massive "Altar de la Patria," a museum exhibiting works by artists from the countries he helped liberate, and a botanical garden inhabited by iguanas. Look for the decadent marble bathtub, which is for many visitors the highlight of the tour. My favorite part of this place was our "tour guide". The museum has senior year students doing community hours as tours and through their stories you go back in history to the time of Bolivar. This museum has a special magic, and it's covered by natured, 400 years old trees. The entrance for nonresidents it's like $12 but it's worth coming and visiting. Even for the 'gram is a good stop. There's the main "house" museum and a contemporary section built years after to showcase the work of emerging artists. Parking is free and there's a gift/coffee shop to get drinks, snacks and souvenirs.
Botanical garden mixed with a cool museum and art galleries. Kind of a random assortment of things, but I could spend a good long day at this one. Learn about Simon Bolivar, the Libertador.
