Follow the trail of mythical El Dorado and you'll end up at Laguna de Guatavita. Legend has it that a Muisca tribal chief known as El Dorado--the Golden One--covered himself in golden dust and disappeared into the mysterious crater lake to fulfill an initiation rite. Over the centuries, the myth evolved until El Dorado came to represent a lost city allegedly hiding an abundance of treasures. While you're unlikely to find material riches on a visit to the site, you can enjoy splendid views of the circular lake and its surrounding area. • The place is beautiful, has a lot of history, very well maintained, the attention of the guides is very good (that is if something scolding, at least the one that touched us). The lagoon is splendid, the scenery is wonderful. Be prepared for rain because it's unpredictable. Take panela water with arepa at the bottom of the lagoon. Please note that arrival by car can be difficult if there is bad weather. They'll connect with nature.

  • The Guatavita Lagoon is an excellent place, knowing that the legend of gold is there is something amazing. A landscape that cannot be forgotten and know about how and what the ancestors did by the guides is something that enriches the intellect. The gold pieces on display from the second floor of the gold museum are part of what is rescued in the lagoon of The Chief Guatavita.
