Catedral Metropolitana, San Salvador

4.2
#3 of 17 in Historic Sites in El Salvador
The final resting place of assassinated archbishop Oscar Romero, Catedral Metropolitana has a colorful history hiding behind its towering white facade. The principal church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Salvador, the cathedral was completed and inaugurated after years of construction in 1999, built on the previous site of the Temple of Santo Domingo. Read up on your history before visiting, as the white simplistic architecture only hints at the building's eventful past. In 1980, a shooting and subsequent stampede at the cathedral during archbishop Romero's funeral shocked the nation. More recent controversy involved the removal of the famous and much loved mural that once adorned its entrance, by the then Archbishop of San Salvador. • This Cathedral is the place where rest the Archbishop Oscar Romero, assassinated in 1980. Pope John Paul II, visited twice this Cathedral, he prayed on the tomb of Oscar Romero. Also on March 2011, President Barak Obama visited the Cathedral and the tomb. As this place was not planned on the trip of the President, for security reason, they needed to block all the city to allow the President of USA to access the Cathedral. According to Pope John Paul II, this Cathedral is "intimately allied with the joys and hopes of the Salvadoran people."[
  • Fully renovated historical center, which has night life. Great restaurants, and street artists
