Trip Planner: Central America / El Salvador / San Salvador Department / San Salvador / Catedral Metropolitana
The final resting place of assassinated archbishop Oscar Romero, Catedral Metropolitana has a colorful history hiding behind its towering white facade. The principal church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Salvador, the cathedral was completed and inaugurated after years of construction in 1999, built on the previous site of the Temple of Santo Domingo. Read up on your history before visiting, as the white simplistic architecture only hints at the building's eventful past. In 1980, a shooting and subsequent stampede at the cathedral during archbishop Romero's funeral shocked the nation. More recent controversy involved the removal of the famous and much loved mural that once adorned its entrance, by the then Archbishop of San Salvador. esta catedral es muy linda , no es ostentosa como algunas otras , pero muy sobria y con acabados arquitectonicos muy lindos . estube unos pocos minutos pero la verdad es muy linda y vale la pena . more »this cathedral is very nice, not ostentatious like some others, but very sober and with very nice architectural finishes. I'm a few minutes but the truth is very nice and it's worth it.
Beautiful cathedral located in downtown San Salvador. I love the art in particular the art celebrating Archbishop Oscar Romero. The architecture is quite nice. The cathedral was completed in 1999
The cathedral is a monumental building. Just thinking about its massive size makes one wonder the number of workers needed to complete its construction. The outside of the place is nice and neat, especially at night.
