Sainte-Chapelle, Paris

4.6
#5 of 4,878 in Historic Sites in France
Soaring stained glass windows beam a myriad of colored light onto the floor's rich tile mosaics inside Sainte-Chapelle. This house of worship is one of the highest achievements of the Rayonnant period Gothic architecture, and retains one of the most extensive collections of 13th-century stained glass anywhere in the world. Built by the French kings to house the relics of the Crown of Thorns, this "jewel box" structure has two levels and an impressive vaulted ceiling. • First by walking in, it seems as yet another tourist place, full of people, not much to see. Yet then we arrive to the correct chapel and oh boy! It was magnificent, it was massive yet so detailed...  more »
  • A lovely church, with fantastic stained glass and painted decoration. Would have been good to access more information about it, however information cards, though available in a number of languages...  more »

  • Beautifully restored chapel, still ongoing. The lower level allowed closer look while the upper level was grand and has impressive height of stained glass windows. ⛪ Entrance is 10€ for adults above 26 years old. Free for others below. Queue for security check. Can be a bit crowded in the small chapel but attendants warned everyone to be quiet so that the ambience remained respectful.
  • There was quite a line when we came but it moved quickly. The staff keeps reminding the people to be quiet which helps the atmosphere a lot. Overall it was pretty crowded. But when I walked up from the downstairs chapel to the upstairs one it was a stunning experience of overwhelming beauty. The windows are stunning. They also have big cards with explanations in multiple languages by the exit stairs. That was very helpful. It is definitely worth visiting while in Paris.
