In the 1970s, Alexanderplatz became the centerpiece of East Germany's modern socialist approach to architecture and city planning. Alex, as many locals call it, has lived many lives over the centuries, including cattle market, military parade ground, center stage of one of the largest anti-government demonstrations in the country's history, and modern transportation hub. The square's name honors Tsar Alexander I of Russia, who visited the city in 1805. Today, the square attracts tourists with its iconic clock, a rotating installation displaying time around the globe. The nearby TV tower, the city's highest structure, features a popular rotating viewing platform. A must see if you are in Berlin, perhaps best viewed from the TV tower also. Great transport links, you can probably add this in passing, and do not need to go out of your way to see. more »

Not overly excited about this place. It has a very large train station but the World Clock is what I liked the most. The people watching was fun. You should visit and decide yourself if it's worth the hype.
