Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus, Berlin

4.7
#11 of 77 in Shopping in Berlin
A treasure for English-speaking visitors to the city, Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus includes two entire floors dedicated exclusively to books printed in English. The shop is so large and well-stocked that it's easy to lose track of time inside this book-lover's playground. The store includes an on-site cafe and remains open later than most other shops, allowing visitors plenty of leisurely browsing time in the evening. Five sprawling floors are packed wall to wall with books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines, leaving no genre unaccounted for. The staff speaks fluent English and is readily available to help you locate whatever you're seeking. You can borrow reading glasses or a portable CD player at the info desk. Dussmann is awesome! Even if you enter with a concrete desire to buy this book, there is the danger that you walk with many books of similar genres from the store. Anyone who loves books, is here best hands to spend well 1/2 day - especially in rainy weather ;-). Very nice also the hanging gardens and the Café in the basement. There you can relax a little bit of the buying frenzy. Great, I found the extra English language department below on the ground floor. A must-see is now visiting the Dussmann Berlin!

If you know a better book or record shop then go there instead of Dussmann's. I can't imagine that there is a better one anywhere in the world.  more »

If you like books and video then you get here. Huge amounts! In particular, I recommend the Department with travel literature. A lot to choose from! Only drawback as a foreign tourist is that most of the books are in German. But there are some English books too! Recommended!

  • Books, books, books, books, books, books, and more books. Everyone who likes to read will find something (as will those who don't). I particularly liked the range of design and photography books. Was thinking about giving only four stars, because the sheer amount and variety of books (and other media) makes it very hard not to spend several hours in their shop.
  • The perfect place for book and music lovers! It has many hidden spots to just take a book or listen to a cd, and relax. I have literally spent days in there! Also very nice: the english book shop at the back of the ground floor, near the waterfall. (Yes, I said waterfall)
  • Heaven for book lovers. Great selection of new releases as well as some more esoteric volumes available for purchase. Huge German language section, where you will be able to buy your Sprachschule books for almost any course in Berlin. Nice selection of art and travel books. If you are someone who loves bookstores then Dussmann is a must visit. Any Americans or Brits will immediately feel at home here as it seems to be modeled in the style of large Barnes & Noble shops in major cities.
  • The best English book store in Berlin. The Dussmann House has a huge bookstore inside covering all genres in German. The reason why I visit this place though is the English book store. It is a two level store offering all sorts of genres. Inside you will find cozy reading corners where you can sit to get to know all the books a bit better. In the building you will also find a cafe where you can relax over a drink after doing your book shopping.
  • Perhaps my most favorite book store in the world. A great music collection. I always find what I'm looking for

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
