#12 of 97 in Shopping in Berlin
A treasure for English-speaking visitors to the city, Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus includes two entire floors dedicated exclusively to books printed in English. The shop is so large and well-stocked that it's easy to lose track of time inside this book-lover's playground. The store includes an on-site cafe and remains open later than most other shops, allowing visitors plenty of leisurely browsing time in the evening. Five sprawling floors are packed wall to wall with books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines, leaving no genre unaccounted for. The staff speaks fluent English and is readily available to help you locate whatever you're seeking. You can borrow reading glasses or a portable CD player at the info desk. • Dussmann is awesome! Even if you enter with a concrete desire to buy this book, there is the danger that you walk with many books of similar genres from the store. Anyone who loves books, is here best hands to spend well 1/2 day - especially in rainy weather ;-). Very nice also the hanging gardens and the Café in the basement. There you can relax a little bit of the buying frenzy. Great, I found the extra English language department below on the ground floor. A must-see is now visiting the Dussmann Berlin!

  • If you know a better book or record shop then go there instead of Dussmann's. I can't imagine that there is a better one anywhere in the world.  more »
  • If you like books and video then you get here. Huge amounts! In particular, I recommend the Department with travel literature. A lot to choose from! Only drawback as a foreign tourist is that most of the books are in German. But there are some English books too! Recommended!

  • What a discovery! I passed this place several times, but never entered, because I thought it is another boring book store or something. If you'd like to find great books, vintage audio cassettes, discs and vinyls and accompanying stuff, this is your place! If you don't want to buy boring souvenirs, but would like to bring your friends something really worthy from Berlin, this is your place! If you'd like to find fancy wrapping paper, cards and other nice little things, English books and much-much more, this is your place! There is also a nice area with the green plants wall and really fresh air. And it works until midnight ;)
  • It's the best book store I have ever been into. They have a huge international section on the first floor, an incredible music selection on the ground floor and my personal favorite: a piano where you can play the huge selection of scores they have in the basement. You can spend a nice free day there reading and eating in the restaurant too.
  • If you're into books like I am, this is paradise. There is a huge German selection, but also a very decent English bookshop where you can find classics and new editions. There's something for everyone here. Also, it is open until quite late.
  • Huge. Paradise for book worms and office stationary stuff. Has a good collection of English language books as well. You will always end up buying something there before exiting.
  • A huge books and DVD store, good prices, nice service, friendly staff.. You can have a very wide choices to buy books written by many languages, very multiple kinds. I liked this book store so much from my first visit.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
