Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin

4.5
#15 of 1,289 in Things to do in Berlin
Regarded as one of the country's most elegant squares, Gendarmenmarkt is dominated by two domed cathedrals and the city's renowned concert hall. The square was created in the 17th century, then massively reconstructed and expanded in 1773 by architect Georg Christian Unger. This public space was named after an 18th-century regiment consisting of French Huguenot immigrants, whose story you can explore at the museum inside the imposing French cathedral. Though many of the historic structures were damaged or destroyed during World War II, the buildings have since been fully restored. Be sure to climb the cathedrals' towers for views of the historic parts of the city. • Aside the Protestant Church German and other Catholic French and half the concert hall. It is worth to see the square day and night.

  • A lovely square but not much happening when we visited. I expected there to be little market stalls, music perhaps. It was dead. Especially on a Sunday. The square itself was lovely though, beautiful ...  more »

  • Big historic market square between two identical churches (French cathedral and German cathedral) and a theatre on the third side. It's a picturesque place. The food options are pretty standard tho. Still, you definitely don't want to miss Gendarmenmarkt on your trip through Berlin. Good public transportation options nearby.
  • One of the nicest squares in Berlin, filled with history. Make sure to read or ask about the 2 churches and buildings there, very interesting piece of Berlin's history. Surrounded by lots of cafes and coffee shops, and when the weather is nice you can enjoy sitting outdoors. Location is very central. If in Berlin, it is worth a visit and spending a day or an evening around.
  • Great place. All 3 buildings on 3 sides gives great panoramic views. Don't know how it would look in winter but it was awesome in April. Buildings on both sides are identical but names are different.
  • Nice place to visit in Berlin. We took the guided tour and the guide explained us the importance of this square. On any sunny day. It's worth visiting. At the square , at the centre you have old theatre and at both side have the identical Church of different sect.
  • The square itself is in rather picturesque place, the Christmas market here somewhat leaves to be desired. Food options are pretty standard, mulled wine not quite good, but not horrible either. Entrance is not free, and if you feel more comfortable at less crowded markets, the fee might be totally worth it. Personally, I would recommend to experiment with other, more lustrous markets and try you luck with finding better options on mulled wine and food (long waiting lines are usually a good indicator of quality), because the reward of having a glass of really good mulled wine in a Christmas market is actually worth the search and wait.
