Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin

4.6
#14 of 836 in Things to do in Berlin
Regarded as one of the country's most elegant squares, Gendarmenmarkt is dominated by two domed cathedrals and the city's renowned concert hall. The square was created in the 17th century, then massively reconstructed and expanded in 1773 by architect Georg Christian Unger. This public space was named after an 18th-century regiment consisting of French Huguenot immigrants, whose story you can explore at the museum inside the imposing French cathedral. Though many of the historic structures were damaged or destroyed during World War II, the buildings have since been fully restored. Be sure to climb the cathedrals' towers for views of the historic parts of the city. • By the greatness of the buildings do you feel as a man very small. The cosy terraces in good weather make sure you very ample time can take to thoroughly to view everything from different perspectives.

  • A place of old buildings framed: German Cathedral, French Cathedral and the concert hall. Worth watching, if it is the first time in Berlin.

  • Beautiful place, about which I had never heard, nor were there on coach tours. It is worth to go to this place, to see an impressive architectural. Hence, close to Checkpoint Charlie, and the surrounding area, along with the Friedrichstrasse and many houses, is worth your time.

  • Gendarmenmarkt is a beautiful square in the heart of Berlin. I was in Berlin for work, staying at the Hilton, and Gendarmenmarkt was just across the street. There are three beautiful buildings flanking the square - Konzerthaus Berlin (concert hall), the Berlin Church and the French Church. All of these buildings were heavily damaged during WWII, but have since been restored. It's a really nice place and I enjoyed relaxing out here after work.
  • Beautiful historical location and must see in Berlin. Restaurants etc. very pricey, but the museum is reasonable priced. Good view from the tower.
  • A more quiet area that is still close to the major tourist attractions. Plenty of good restaurants and Cafe's nearby to stop and eat.
  • French church Is the oldest church built at Gendarmenmarkt, the French church (Protestant) built by the Huguenot community between 1701 to 1705. It was planed at the same design format of the Huguenot church in Saint-Maurice - France , which was destroyed by order of King Louis . The added church tower was built in 1785. At present , the church building used as the museum of French Huguenots.
  • Great place to see some beautiful architecture and enjoy food or coffee in the surrounding restaurants and cafés.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
