Großer Tiergarten, Berlin

4.5
#1 of 55 in Parks in Berlin
Covering more than 210 hectares (520 acres) through the center of the city, Großer Tiergarten is one of Germany's largest urban parks. Its beginnings trace back to the 16th century, when the area was designated as a royal hunting zone. Later, as the city expanded and the hunting grounds shrank, the park became a popular relaxation area for the general public. Today, the Spree river and a number of important architectural landmarks border the sprawling park grounds. Look in the middle of the park for a large square with a tall column that the locals the Great Star. It was placed here in 1864 to celebrate Prussia's victory over Denmark. Stop by the park to take a stroll, picnic, cycle, jog, or play soccer with the local crowd. • You will find a little green area in the city as it is to take a walk in the Tiergarten to recommend. Many statues and part history along the ruta here too.

  • Although it is quite dead in winters (I am definitely coming back in summers), it is a lovely walk. Enjoy!  more »
  • A nice walk in the middle of Berlin with much forest, beautiful footpaths and with plenty of water unfortunately we found only a public toilet, which was very unkempt

  • When the weather is nice in Berlin then you have to come here. Magnificent green area next to the spree river. You can have good time with group of people or by yourself. You can even rent a boat. Also you can do different kinds of sport for example running, cycling, football or maybe meditation.
  • The great Tiergarten had been the hunting area for the king to fulfill his ambition. You still find a lot of sculpture about the hunted animal and the scenery around this theme. Nowadays this is the green lung of Berlin City and welcomes everyone who likes to relaxed on some preferred Meadows or laying around multiple lakes you will find in there. If you be there for the first time it could happen that you got lost or walking around circles - but don't worry just walk straight until you get to a common place and be aware you are in the center of Berlin so can't get lost. A lot of people used it to exercise, they improve their running skills or drive by bicycle through Tiergarten to achieve other city destination without being troubled by any traffic and pollution. It's always refreshing and take away the stress and tension you might have. There are a lot of very good places you can explore and find in the Tiergarten - it would take several days to find out - so take your time and enjoy, exploring this excellent garden and be astonished what you see and find. Best period of the year it's during summertime when you need a cooling fresh atmosphere to relaxed and to enjoy the full greenery of the great Tiergarten.
  • In the middle of Berlin but it looks like a forest. A perfect place to run, walk or just chill. Also a majestic central avenue and a few landmarks in the way.
  • Great place to wander and unwind when you're in Berlin. Too many tourists stop at the Brandenburg Gate and don't explore and further, which is a missed opportunity. Don't forget to see the Soviet monument and the great bunch of eateries at the entrance to the Zoo, or just bring some food, sit and relax in the gardens.
  • Great and huge State Park. You can do everything here and enjoy the sunny weather. Restaurants, Bars, beer garden etc. is in the park. Also you can rent paddle boats. It's great to enjoy alone or with the whole family. Go for it!!
