Jewish Museum Berlin, Berlin

4.0
#6 of 120 in Museums in Berlin
Jewish Museum Berlin is one of Europe's largest venues dedicated to Jewish history. A sobering exhibit dedicated to the reign of the Third Reich presents Germany through the eyes of the Jewish minority. Important events in Jewish history are portrayed via fine art, manuscripts, photographs, and family memorabilia. Two millennia of German-Jewish history are on display in the permanent exhibit space, as well as in several changing presentation areas. All of this is spread over two buildings, one of which is designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. The staff can accompany you through the exhibits. Or you can use an audio guide and explore this comprehensive history museum at your own pace. • No doubt the elderly and disabled are able to view the various floors and exhibits in the Liebeskind addition to this museum, but probably not easily. One walks up, down and around on uneven floors (a...  more »

  • This museum is great when visited in tandem with the Topography of Terror as it gives a different viewpoint of the atrocities committed in WWII. My only criticism is that to access the main museum par...  more »

  • Incredible museum. One of the best things I did in Berlin. Only allocated it an hour or two but ended up spending half the day there. The architecture is very unique and creates a really engaging and moving experience. The museum deals with the holocaust but also has an exhibition all about Jewish history and culture from well before WWII. Very informative.
  • Great Museum. I like that it is not forcing a narrative on you, but exhibits a great deal of primary sources and leaves the interpretation to the visitor. I understand from the comments that this seems boring or confusing to people. In the end it allows people to be historians in their own right. History is about evaluating sources and then creating a narrative. So I am grateful to the museum for allowing this freedom.
  • This is by far one of my favourite museums. I always recommend it for newcomers. It is massive but does a good job of mixing history with exhibition. The garden and silo parts are very interesting and the historical objects with stories were fantastic. Definitely on my list of top 10 things to do!
  • Must see! Fab museum and well designed and thought out. Not expensive. Great place to immerse yourself. Visit the femme gallery, really makes you think from all aspects.
  • Wow! A thoughtful design, that leaves the viewer feeling unsettled, likely to portray the feelings of those ripped from their homes and families. I spent 4 hours in the museum and could have spent 4 more, easily. If you have multiple days to spend there, do, because there is so much to see and it is so powerful, one day was not enough.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
