Neues Museum, Berlin

4.3
#3 of 120 in Museums in Berlin
For a rare look at the iconic bust of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti, visit Neues Museum on the city's famous Museum Island. The museum houses vast collections of prehistoric and ancient Egyptian artifacts. The building itself draws both art and architecture enthusiasts with its award-winning use of modern iron construction and original Neoclassical design. Originally built between 1843 and 1855, it was designed by architect Friedrich August Stuler. The museum was closed in 1939 and was heavily damaged during the bombing raids of the city. Architect David Chipperfield spearheaded the post-war rebuilding efforts, and the museum finally reopened in 2009. Skip the long lines by booking your tickets online. • The museum has an impressive collection from both the Egyptian - and the bronze age. Unfortunately you are (currently?) not able to see both exhibitions separately from each other as your are forced in a "one direction" tour on the higher floors of the building. This is making you going back and forward between Egypt and the bronze age at every floor. By itself it is not a big issue, but it breaks the consistency of the story the museum could be able to tell otherwise.
  • I got up nice and early to see this museum and I wasn't disappointed. This was my favorite museum of my whole entire trip. You can easily spends so long in this museum and not get bored. There is so much to see and so many amazing artifacts. Pick up a floor plan to make sure you don't miss a thing. I would also recommend the audio guide. I didn't use this in my visit but if ever I go again I defiantly would pick it up as I wanted to know so much more about what I was seeing. All in all you have to see this place. In my opinion it's the best museum in Berlin.
  • Their collection is incredible when it comes to Egyptology and Roman/Germanic history. The modern yet more classic architecture inside is a treat and the presentation is very appealing. To find the cloak room downstairs it can be a bit of a maze though. You should definitely make sure you got enough time on your hand. I spent over 2 hours here just to see all. I can highly recommend it - you will just forget the time when you are here.
  • Have you seen the Golden Hat? You should-- everyone comes for Nefertiti, but this is one thing not to be missed. It's curious history and unknown origins are quite compelling.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
