Explore the dark side of Hungarian and European history at House of Terror Museum, a specialty museum focusing on fascist and communist regimes. The permanent exhibits feature artifacts from Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, the fascist Arrow Cross Party, and the communist AVH (Hungarian State Protection Authority). Walk into the depths of violent, dictatorial moments that took place the 20th century by stepping into the museum's basement, where AVH prisoners were once held and tortured. These cells serve as a memorial to victims of the country's bloody regimes. Since it opened in 2002, this museum has become a member of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience. House of Terror Museum Reviews
Very effective museum about nazism and communism in Hungary. The leaflets are informative and straightforward, I appreciated just how to the point they were ie this is what it was like in Hungary... more »
Never learned much about this in Canadian high school. Found the stories and history very sobering. Museum is very well laid out. The exhibits beautifully and simply presented. It would have been..... more »
A nice historic museum that showcases the dark past. I hoped for more interactive design and more „guidance“ then just random sheets of paper placed in rooms. The history is so interesting! Overall it is a good visit if you are more then 2 days in Budapest.
Great and impressively big museum! The exhibition design is one of the best I've ever seen! You won't see rooms with old relics lying around and dry text boards on the wall – every room has its own theme, there are a lot of videos or audios you can listen to. I thoroughly enjoyed it – even though I did not manage to get one of the audio guides as they were all already in use. But (!) every room has a really long text both in Hungarian and English that you can read on your own; the videos all have English subtitles. Still, there will be a few things that were not translated, but I didn't mind as I realized that I wonÄt be able to absorb every bit of information anyway. You can easily spend around one and a half hours per floor here – and there is a total of three floors. Would definitely recommend this! It would have just been nice, if there were shorter versions of the really long explanatory texts available. Often times you had to choose between reading the whole thing or not reading it at all because it was so much info without a summary at all.
