Bet Guvrin-Maresha National Park, Kiryat Gat

#4 of 22 in Nature in Southern District
Must see · World heritage site · National Park · Nature / Park
Take a tour of the World Heritage Site of Bet Guvrin-Maresha National Park, a vast archaeological complex that contains the remains of two ancient cities. One of the cities, Maresha, dates back to the eighth-century BCE kingdom of Judah, while Beit Guvrin, then known as Eleutheropolis, was inhabited in the Roman and Byzantine periods. Discover thousands of bell-shaped subterranean caves that dot the hills of the historic site, forming a labyrinthine network of quarries, baths, hideaways, storage facilities, and even burial grounds. Apart from the caverns, you can also visit the remains of a Roman amphitheater, and a church that was rebuilt by 12th-century crusaders. • This place has it all. It is huge and gigantic and sprawling. One will find and can explore the remains of Maresha, the southern regional city and administrative center of King Solomon 3000 years.....  more »
  • A group of limestone bell caves, well maintained, beautiful to look at and explore. All c-19 compliant, when we were there. A very nice 3 hour visit on a cool day. Not to be done in the summer.  more »
  • Awesome place to visit. I went to see the caves which are pretty cool as well and did not even know that across the street is a huge ruin of a city with Roman Baths, an amphitheatre, churches, etc. Pretty cool place. Don't take a stroller. Lots of picnic areas and plenty of parking. You need to go to the cave area first to pay our show your park pass, then go over to the city room side since there was no one there to check you in and take payment. You can hike the trail with all the caves or drive to the four different parking areas along the trail. Fun place for a family day. Recommend planning for 4-6 hours here.
  • Beautiful sights of ancient caves, both ritual and industrial. What makes it so interesting is the historical period spanning nearly 2000 years (!). Picking delicious carobs from the dozens of trees spread throughout the park is highly recommended (super tasty and healthy). The Roman amphitheater near the gas station is very impressive as well. There's much more, but that's all I covered. Enjoy
