KGB Museum (Genocido Auku Muziejus), Vilnius

4.4
#2 of 42 in Museums in Vilnius
Housed in the former headquarters of the Soviet Union's notorious security service, KGB Museum (Genocido Auku Muziejus) documents the tactics of the secret police and memorializes the victims. Though Lithuania was a part of the USSR until its independence in 1990, its forcible incorporation into the country in 1940 led to a great deal of resentment and resistance against Russia. Visit the museum to see a multitude of exhibits displaying personal items of victims of the 50-year occupation who were killed in this very building. Don't miss the prison here, where many of the most ghastly abuses were carried out. Keep in mind that, due to the brutal subject matter, the museum may not be suitable for young children. • This visit was very educational. Great exhibition on three floors. Authentic weapons and uniforms on display from ww2.  more »
  • Well done, a tour is a must. Anyone who has seen this can immediately see why the urge for freedom in Lithuania was so strong and the Western orientation was so powerful and still is today. Whoever has been here, individual freedom is suddenly particularly valuable again and understands how communism suffered and died in the Baltics. Especially on business trips is often no time, but here you MUST have been and the two hours teach you nothing but humility. In any case, I was very moved and the fate of the people who fell into the clutches of the secret service did not leave me cold.

  • Very thought provoking. Amazing how humans can make fellow humans suffer for political views. The question is, are current governments in the world subjecting suspects and opponents of their political views to almost identical treatment and will future generations be able to view details as we have here?
  • Thought provoking place that depicts Lithuania's history and occupation by Russia and Germany. You can visit the prison cells where political and perceived anti soviets were imprisoned and executed. Sobering and reflective memorial museum
