Iglesia de La Merced, Granada

4.6
#1 of 18 in Historic Sites in Nicaragua
Pay a visit to Iglesia de La Merced, a historic site of Catholic pilgrimage. Originally built in 1539, the church was razed by pirates in the mid 17th century and rebuilt with its current Baroque facade in the 1780s. Restored with an ornate interior in the 1860s, the church today contains an image of the Virgen de Fatima, a sacred object that draws many pilgrims. Climb up the bell tower that flanks the church to gain extensive views of the city and beyond, including many major urban and natural attractions. • To reach Granada and install me in the hostel, or two seconds I hesitate to visit la Merced and its Bell Tower, from where you enjoy a view of Granada fully privileged. That air to Cartagena, the Lake, the imposing volcano, sky cleared on a warm afternoon. The cost of access is $1.00 invested very well so you can enjoy a spectacular view, and quite a spectacle when responsible children rise to the respective bells just before mass. With a rather colonial facade and somewhat in ruins, the interior of the Church is quite simple and delicate at the same time, I was surprised by the delicacy of the images. Certainly a must for Granada, because Yes.

  • Pretty average church with nice facade and stunning view from the top tower. $1 fee to go up the tower.
  • The climb to the bell tower cost 1$ and provides a great view on the city in the late afternoon
  • It's a shame really, because the views from here are actually pretty stunning, but like a lot of people say, it is often closed for no particular reason. I feel kind of harsh rating it anything below average, but the actual church itself is very average, the views are what make this so great... And they are pretty hard to come by.
  • Definitely the best view of the city!
  • On of the best views of town can be caught here.
