Mombacho Volcano National Preserve, Granada

4.3
Hike to the gaping crater of Mombacho Volcano National Preserve, a dormant volcano offering spectacular views over Lake Nicaragua and Granada. Two trails navigate their way to the summit, one far more challenging the other, with almost constant 45 degree ascents and descents. You can only take this more difficult trail with a guide, but you'll be rewarded for your efforts with views of the dwarf forest. You should, however, consider taking a guide regardless of which trail you choose, as you'll learn more about the geology and wildlife of the reserve. Be sure to stop in the cafe on the volcano and sample the local coffee, and bring sturdy boots and plenty of water for the journey. • Go to Volcano at Masaya as this one is a rip-off with high fees to get up hugely steep 5 kms. from entry gate only to see what may have been a crater but now covered in foliage and uninteresting. Two ...  more »
  • After the masaya volcano in the car we were motivated to do some exercise and walk up. We find egalemebt the price of the ascent by jeep exaggerated (tour $ 20) from granada. The rise is 5.5 km and it's steep to steep especially by 35 degrees, but totally doable! Follow the road, the path is therefore not necessarily the nicest but impossible to lose you. The climb took us 2 hours by regular breaks then 1 h 30 for the round at the top then down 1. You have to pay 3 times: 1 time $ 5 to enter and another $ 2 up for the trail. We went by public transport: - Bus at the end of the street Calle el commercio, just before the bridge and after the UNO petrol station - take any bus that goes in the direction of Rivas, Nandaie or Jinotepe (10 cordobas per person) - get off at empalme El guanacaste, is a very big intersection in t - must get left side of the sidewalk and walk straight. After a few meters on the left is the road that goes up to the volcano. It says and it makes sense since it is in the direction of the Mombacho. This road is 1.5 kmpour reach the hut, or we pay the entrance of the volcano. The tuk tuk can you go up to this cabin.

  • We only went on the shorter hike thru the cloud forest but our guide spent several hours explaining the vegetation & helping us to spot animals. The temperature was also a nice break from the heat of ...  more »

  • This is a dormant volcano so no steam or lava. The peak is often in the clouds and a chilly and breezy 60 degrees F. It offers awesome hiking (slippery steps) and breathtaking views that overlook Grenada and the lake. One of my favorite parts of this is the ride up and down with the crazy steep roads.
  • I enjoyed the Mombacho tour but it was very cloudy on the day we went so there wasn’t much to see. Our guide was very personable and taught us lots but he was unable to prevent my husband from falling through a bridge when a board broke! They also did nothing about his very seriously injured legs and didn’t even follow up to see if he was ok. He went to hospital for X-ray and stitches and antibiotics with a driver arranged by the host of our lodge but nothing was offered from the tour company. Others we met in our travels also had boards break underfoot and felt it was not well maintained. Keep kids close and walk with care. Great views of caution is exercised.
  • Great tour.m of the cloud forest. Informative. No upsell. Rainforest Alliance certified coffee operation
  • If you are staying in Granada or anywhere nearby it's always a good idea to come to this reserve learn a bit of the wonderful cloudy forest and the huge amount of animal and vegetal species that live in the reserve. Some species like the mombacho salamander are in fact endemic of this place and truly beautiful. Costs are a bit higher for foreign tourists than they are for local visitors but still totally worth it. Some trails require the service of a guide with extra costs but that's in fact a great plus because they are (normally) very well documented, kind and very capable of answering questions about the reserve and it's lifeforms. Totally recommended at least once in a lifetime.
  • It is such a gorgeous place to visit! And we saw a SLOTH! Super close n cute :)
