The highest regions of the volcano are home to a cloud forest and dwarf forest, which contain flora and fauna endemic purely to the volcano. An increasingly popular tourist attraction, the volcano has fantastic views of Lake Nicaragua and the city of Granada. The volcano also has two hiking trails, a moderate one that circles the main crater, and another, more difficult trail (El Puma), which must be led by a guide. The more difficult trail is the only way to see some features such as the dwarf forest. The trail is almost completely 45° inclines and declines for about two miles.
More than 700 different plants are registered around Mombacho, including many species of orchids.

Mombacho Volcano National Preserve Reviews
the tourist center at the base is awesome and has great info, but the volcano at the top is lacking in that sort of thing. overall the reserve is pretty remarkable and the volcano pretty amazing... more »
Stayed in Granada for 2 weeks ... this was our favorite activity. Great hikes and views. Worth the entrance fee. more »
We did the 6km walk from the entrance to the top, the walk is hard work and very steep. Took us 3 hours with breaks on the way but we saw some nice wildlife, howler and spider monkeys in the trees along the way. We did the 1.5km crater trail walk which was nice, but not alot of wildlife around to see which was disappointing. The walk back down is hard on your knees due to the steepness, we were lucky to get offered a lift half way down which was much appreciated.
Get ready to get your shoes dirty. Contemplate beautiful viewpoints and trek all around the crater of the volcano. A really good place to connect with nature.
