Volcan cerro negro, Leon

4.7
Trek up Central America's youngest volcano, Volcan cerro negro. Born in 1850, the volcano has erupted frequently over the decades since it first appeared, but tour groups run hikes up towards the crater during times of inactivity. The basalt cinder cone looks entirely at odds with the surrounding lush hillsides, giving the opportunity for dramatic photography. Make sure you bring lots of water on your hike up the volcano: it's hot, dry, and windy the farther you go on the 45-minute hike. The way down remains much simpler, whether you wish to walk or sled down the volcano. • This was fantastic! I had booked a group trip and all communications prior to my visit were excellent. The trip itself is so worthwhile. It's a bumpy 1 hour ride from Leon to the volcano, but this aff...  more »

  • During our tour we have chosen to be in the morning to do the excursion to the Cerro Negro volcano. It was a decent climb, but very rewarding. You could choose to have with a board to slide or run down. We had to walk. In the beginning I was quite afraid to slip. I ran very careful, this saw the Guide and they helped me to gangs and before I knew it I was safely back at the foot of the volcano on the rest.

  • A few of us went volcano boarding a few years ago, and even if had just gone for the hike and views, it would have been spectacular. Boarding itself was great fun, but make sure you cover up as much skin as you can... and bring water!
  • Volcano boarding is of course the main reason people come and I did it too but volcano itself is much more attractive than volcano boarding. Hiking up isn't hard even with the board. On the top, the view is amazing and you can feel the heat if you touch the surface. Try to dig just a little bit. You can see steam coming out of it.
  • Just amazing. Climb is moderate. You must bring your own equipment, but nothing really hard.
  • Hike up th Volcano wasn't that hard at all. A little tough due to the first quarter being lose rocks, but after that it's a gentle slope up to the sledding point. I'd advise for people to stop as they go to take photos. Very beautiful views. The sledding down as fun but me being clumsy kept going side to side. Lots of fun and would recommend.
  • I went Volcano Boarding here with Bigfoot (hostel) and it was a blast! Definitely the most fun experience I had in Nicaragua. The hike up Cerro Negro is tough in the high heat and high winds (I'd recommend a porter for your board), but the views and slide down were well worth the trip up.
