Isla Ometepe, Moyogalpa

Formed by two volcanoes, Isla Ometepe is the largest island on the vast Lake Nicaragua. With a name meaning “two mountains” in Nahuatl, the remote island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, rich in culture, wildlife, and history. Considered a sacred land by the indigenous nations, the island offers visitors numerous archaeological sites, artifacts, and petroglyphs to admire. Explore the island’s isolated, scenic trails, and spot numerous plant and animal species, or lounge on one of the many picturesque lakeside beaches. You can try fishing, horseback riding, cycling, or even climbing the volcanoes, but note that you need a guide for the strenuous trek. One of the volcanoes is still active. Isla Ometepe is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Isla de Ometepe Edition.

  • I loved the island of Ometepe Nicaragua, honestly had my low expectations but I must say that I was surprised, and far from Rivas can go by bus to the port of the Lake there grab a ferry to the island, the most recommended to move on the island is to rent mot or (that do take their precautions, take photos and videos of the bikes because there will be more than one who will want to go live) as having made that grip the road going towards the other volcano (I think it was called madeiro) well and are enjoying the view there are many places in which you can take beautiful pictures with the volcano in the background, go to the beach to eat something is very cheap and cute eye of super water also go

  • Ometepe was the highlight of my trip in Nicaragua. I saw the most vibrant sunsets, ate fantastic food and saw amazing wildlife. My friend and I rented a scooter for a day and got to see the entire isl...  more »

  • Island has so much to do. People friendly just watch out for the cattle and horses. Stayed in 3 different parts if the island. Taxi drivers will lie say buses are not running and over charge. Negotiate always.
  • Two volcanoes make up this island and you can take a ferry over and enjoy the island beauty and relaxed vibe. There are wild animals everywhere, including white faced monkeys and wild horses roaming the beaches. Not every beach is perfect to swim at, but every angle of the island is definitely beautiful. You can hike the volcanoes or simply find some beachside shade. But be warned, it's hot on Ometepe.
  • Make sure you spend at least 3 days on this fascinating island. Lots to do for kids and adults. Best area for accommodation and food is around the Balgue area. Island is big, plan your transport.
  • great beach but you have to rent a motor bike to get everywhere
  • An absolute must see while in Nicaragua! Our favorite town was Balgue, on the Maderas side of the island - great food options. Ojo de Agua and San Ramon Cascade are great options for activities, but there are also guided tour options to hike both volcanoes if you want.
