Paektusan, Samjiyon

4.0
#4 of 7 in Parks in North Korea
The highest mountain on the Korean Peninsula and an active volcano holding the world's deepest crater lake at its top, Paektusan treats you to exceptional views. As a foreign tourist, you can only reach it by plane. Ideally, try arranging hiking or biking in this area, which shelters many rare and endangered species--owls, woodpeckers, scaly-sided mergansers, Siberian tigers, and Amur leopards among others. The mountain's severe weather has the lake icebound and the highest peak covered in snow seven to eight months of the year, so bring warm clothes and waterproof footwear. Koreans worship the mountain as the place of their ancestral origin, but also as the heart of the Korean Revolution, so pay a visit to the secret camps (one of them the birthplace of leader Kim Jong Il). By using our Samjiyon holiday maker site, you can arrange your visit to Paektusan and other attractions in Samjiyon.
