A perfectly preserved example of classic Omani architecture, Nizwa Fort proudly looks out over the city and remains of the oldest of structures its kind in the country. Constructed above an underground stream in the mid-17th century, the fort is known for its monumental drum tower, soaring 30 m (98.4 ft) up into the sky and studded with lookout and firing points. Long the seat of power for the ruling imams, the fort also served as an intimidating stronghold during various conflicts. Enter past two majestic canons, then wind your way around terraces, corridors, and stairways leading to the top of the cylindrical tower, where panoramic views of the town and Hajar Mountains reward your efforts. It's very well lit, clean. Admission is a bit expensive 5 rials (12)/pers and 3 rials/child. You have access to the entire site of the fortress and a small museum just before the exit. It was interesting.
Have visited Nizwa several times but have never been able to visit the Fort until this summer. It was a great experience, especially for those that enjoy historical sites. I also went shopping in the complex and everyone is kind and willing to negotiate.
We felt very welcome when we visited the place. The staffs are accommodating, warm and hospitable. Not to mention, the rich history within the Fort. :)
