Val... more »The Buddhist monastery of Jaulian is the most beautiful archaeological site in the Taxila area. It is located on a small hill and to access it you have to climb two hundred and fifty steps, comfortable and not very high. It's worth going up here because you've repaid yourself from the vision of a one-of-a-kind grave complex. At the entrance there is an elderly guide who tells the story of the site in a stunted but understandable English; has the merit of not wanting to sell coins and pats. The cemetery area is rightly protected by locked gates. A canopy shelters the sarcophagi with the ashes of Buddhist monks. At first I thought that the sarcophagi had been transported here, instead the current one is their original location. One of them was transferred to the Taxila museum. Fine sculptures cover the outer walls of these sarcophagi. Almost all of the sculptures are in good condition. Also worth seeing are the monks' cells and the kitchen. Nice view all around.
This is a great place to visit, if you are generally enthusiastic about ancient ruins and History of Mankind. This place is the world's first ever university according to some historians, while some say one of the very first. Here, Buddhists used to preach and students used to come from far off places. There was a temple and a hostel with the university. What's more interesting is that near it, ruins of a 2200 years old city is located. It amazes in it's own way.
The second oldest university remains of the world where we can find the history of Buddha in sculptured form. It's an amazing ancient place, if you go up to the university, you'll see the whole area easily. This place was chosen wisely by the Buddhist monks. Having a university in the area means that the area was the heart of the city then.
