  • Not far from Islamabad, the archaeological site of Taxila allows a glimpse into the Hellenistic and Buddhist culture of the area. Darius I of Persia annexed Taxila to the Achaemenid Empire in 518 BC, Alexander the Great conquered it in 326 BC, leaving a garrison of Macedonians who lost the city in 317 BC for the benefit of Chandragupta Maurya, who conquered all of Punjab, and his Successors including his nephew Ashoka who transformed her into a thriving Buddhist study center. The site was in continuous expansion between the V and the I century B.C. becoming, with Peshawar, one of the two main centers of the Kingdom of Gandhara. Placed at the junction of three major trade routes, it also played a very important economic and military role. In the area were founded several towns.
