Ampay National Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary established in 1987. It is located in the district of Tamburco, just north of the city of Abancay, Peru. Its 36.35km2, which include Mount Ampay, protect the Pachachaca River basin and several endangered plant species, being the most representative the conifer called Intimpa .HistoryIn the 1930s, the Podocarpus forest at the Mt. Ampay area was botanically identified.In 1983, Dr. Ciro Palomino and the "Asociación Cultural Apurímac" (Apurimac Cultural Society) presented a petition signed by more than 3000 people from the towns of Abancay and Tamburco urging then President Fernando Belaunde to help in the approval of the laws required to declare the forests of Ampay as a protected natural area.Ampay National Sanctuary was established on 23 July 1987, by decree No. 042-87-AG.GeographyThis protected area is located in the district of Tamburco, which belongs to the province of Abancay, region of Apurimac. With an extension of 3635.50hectare the park covers an elevational range from 2,900 to 5,235 meters above sea level in the southeastern Peruvian Andes.Topography in the area consists mostly of steep slopes that culminate in Mount Ampay.The area also includes two small lakes: Angasccocha (at 3250 m) and Uspaccocha (at 3750 m).

    Very close to town but you don't have to walk for long to feel as though you're far away from civilisation. Cost us S.15 in a cab to get there. It took us an hour to walk to the first lake - it's uphi...  more »

    Travel my friend and I. We had all the intentions of this beautiful place. The hike we cost a bit by the fact that I work in office, and that makes us sedentary, but it was sensational to come and enjoy the view that offered us the nature at its maximum espelndor. We carry the best memories...

    We started with a taxi from Abancay, then hiked to the first two lagoons, turned aroundand came back. Took a total of about 6 hours, but on the return there was no way to get a taxi, so had to walk ab...  more »

    Beautiful place. It is advisable to reach large Ampay, despite the fact that the trip is about 4 hours. Many spaces to enjoy.

    With its two stunning Lakes, must be prepared to hike 1-1:30 hours until Ampay small, and from there, approximately 2:30-3 hrs until Ampay Grande. Each of them is worth a lot! If I had had more time, I would have not hesitated to continue the journey by the sanctuary.
