Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu, Machu Picchu

Explore the ruins of Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu, a 15th-century Incan community perched 2,430 m (7,970 ft) above sea level, on a mountain ridge overlooking the Sacred Valley. The partially restored site, built in the typical Incan style of polished dry-stone walls, spreads across multiple man-made terraces. Climb the path that extends above the complex to view the tiered ruins from above, and enjoy commanding views of the spectacular scenery that surrounds it. Built around 1450, possibly as an estate for the Incan emperor Pachacuti, the site was abandoned only a century later during the Spanish conquest. Incredibly, the Spanish conquistadors never learned of the site's existence, and it remained unknown to the wider world until 1911. In 2007, an online poll voted the now renowned site one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. • You hear people say Machu Picchu is spiritual and mystical. I was always skeptical but it there really is something magical about it. Truly incredible.  more »
  • We visited for the day with our Kuoda guide. They timed it perfectly, arriving late morning to view from up high while everyone was at lunch, then lunch (at the hotel buffet there) while everyone was ...  more »
  • Actually Machu Picchu beats expectations. It is very beautiful. Worth all the effort. I walked up and down the bus, which costs $24 round trip. The staircase to climb and descend is heavy. Many do. I wish I had bought the train to Ollantaytambo, which was on promotion of 130 for $70 roundtrip, but has run out. The option to go was: 6:00 van de Cusco to hydroelectric (lots of curves) + 11 km walk to Aguas Calientes. The hike is of moderate difficulty, gave me blisters. It took 3:00 and 2:30 in the back; I thought the back better. We went on a day, visited MP the other day, we slept again in Aguas Calientes and back on the third day, I would have found very tiring visit MP and back walking the same day worth it do everything calmly. For those who don't want to walk, there is a hydroelectric train until Aguas Calientes that costs $31 each excerpt. I found expensive, faced the walk as many. The landscape is beautiful, we walk on the train tracks.
