Trip Planner: South America / Peru / Cusco Region / Sacred Valley / Machu Picchu / Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu
Explore the ruins of Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu, a 15th-century Incan community perched 2,430 m (7,970 ft) above sea level, on a mountain ridge overlooking the Sacred Valley. The partially restored site, built in the typical Incan style of polished dry-stone walls, spreads across multiple man-made terraces. Climb the path that extends above the complex to view the tiered ruins from above, and enjoy commanding views of the spectacular scenery that surrounds it. Built around 1450, possibly as an estate for the Incan emperor Pachacuti, the site was abandoned only a century later during the Spanish conquest. Incredibly, the Spanish conquistadors never learned of the site's existence, and it remained unknown to the wider world until 1911. In 2007, an online poll voted the now renowned site one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Amazing trip, amazing place in Machu Picchu, Cusco, Peru. This wonder of the world is An Most Stunning Natural Environment and the amazing human architecture more »
I visited for a university trip and it was a fantastic historical site to visit. We flew into Lima and then to Cusco. From Cusco we bused and boarded a train. Getting to Machu Picchu was long but really easy. The bus ride to the top is a little nerve racking but everyone made it just fine. I do recommend getting a tour guide to tell you all about the history and architecture of the place. I spent a lot of time hanging out and watching the lamas that roam this place. Some of them are friendly enough to pet and others prefer to be left alone. It helps if you offer them lush handfuls of grass. Everyone in my class had a wonderful time and it was a privilege to be there. There were people from all over the world visiting. I highly recommend visiting if you get the chance.
I would love to visit this place i was showing someone the workmanship of the stone work being done when there wasn't stonemasons like today the stone work blocks are perfectly placed to withstand earthquakes and placed in such away u couldn't slip a razor blade between the joints
