Temple of the Sun, Machu Picchu

One of three primary Machu Picchu structures, Temple of the Sun remains one of Peru's most significant archeological treasures. A well-preserved example of the ancient Incas' advanced stone-building techniques, the semi-circular tower sits on a giant granite slab and contains the celebrated "Inti Watana" stone, a sundial arranged to point at the sun during the winter solstice ritual. The Incas strongly believed their stone sundial held the sun in place on its annual path across the sky. Take a guided tour of this World Heritage Site to learn more about the temple's role in the Inca belief system.
