Rynek Starego Miasta, Warsaw

#1 of 233 in Shopping in Poland
Civic Center · Historic Walking Area
Established in the late 13th century around the time the city itself was founded, Rynek Starego Miasta served as the commercial and cultural heart of Warsaw for several centuries. The large public space hosted regular fairs and occasional executions. One of the city's great survivors, the square was bombed in 1939 and destroyed in 1944 after the Warsaw Uprising. The houses surrounding the square, painstakingly restored in the years following World War II, blend Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles. The square also features the city's main historical museum and is a natural starting or ending point for your tour of the city. • The square didn't have the usual happenings. In fact, it was completely empty with just one shop open.  more »
  • Very pretty area with beautiful and unique houses. If you are interested to know more, there are free walking tours by Walkable held here every day, so you’d just need to check on their website for the timing and location of meet-up. The guide is very knowledgeable and told a lot of interesting stories about the history of the old town.
  • Suuuuuuch a cute square with amazing history behind it! They had to rebuild it entirely only through paintings and old photographs in order to restore it to it's former (and probably even better) glory. So cute and pretty how each house/building is in a different color and if you look at them closely, you can still see what people living there used to do or were known for (as they have like little fish for fishermen, musicians playing for the music house, etc) Definitely nice to walk around, eat at a restaurant around the square, or skate on ice during winter (and also have a mulled wine)
