Formed thousands of years ago, this 98 km (60 mi) long sandspit separates a narrow lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Shared by Russia and Lithuania, the curving stretch of sand varies in width from a minimum of 400 m (1,300 ft) to almost 4 km (2.5 mi). Home to some of the most rapidly moving dunes in Europe, the spit combines sand ridges with wetlands, meadows, and tree groves. To explore the entire spit quickly and comfortably, drive the single paved road from Zelenogradsk in the south to Smiltyne in the north.
