At Senate Square, view Bronze Horseman, Monument To Peter I, an iconic monument commisioned by Catherine the Great and dedicated to her predecessor. Visit the statue facing the Neva River that depicts Peter the Great atop his horse, about to step on a snake, representing his enemies. French artist Etienne Mourise Falconet sculpted the monument, whose popular nickname comes from an 1833 poem by Alexander Pushkin. This sculpture has become a symbol of the city since it was revealed in 1782, and it survived a long siege during World War II.     This statue is part of the beautiful Alexander Gardens. The statue is impressive. The Garden is awesome. Watch out though for some of the people in traditional clothing, who want to get a photo of you, and then after-the-fact charge you money. Some are respectful, but at least one was very aggressive. There are other people who dress up in the area of the Hermitage, who are also aggressive. You just have to try to dodge them or be insistent that you don't want to do it.
