Cueva del Viento, Icod de los Vinos

Cueva del Viento-Sobrado underground complex is the largest lava tube in Europe, and the fifth largest in the world, behind a series of lava tubes in Hawaii. It is also considered the most complex volcanic tube in the world, due to its morphology of several levels and passages. It was created by lava flows from Pico Viejo, next to Mount Teide. The cave is located in the town of Icod de los Vinos in the north of the island of Tenerife, Spain. It extends more than and contains three different levels of passageways, each full of geomorphological phenomena such as lava pits and terraces. The cave is rich in fossils of the "Canarian megafauna". Bones of Gallotia goliath and Canariomys bravoi, an extinct giant lizard and rat, respectively, have been discovered here.Archaeological remains belonging to the Guanches, the ancient Berber native inhabitants of the Canary Islands, were found in several entries to the tube system. At present, the Cueva del Viento is a tourist attraction of the island.

  • Fantastic guide; highly knowledgeable, funny, open to questions and demanding (in a good way, asking control questions along the way to make sure we were paying attention). The tour is 2,5 hours, including intro info at the visitors center, transport to the caves, 1 hour in the amazing lava tubes, more info on the outside + a short walking tour back to the minivans and then finishing up back at the center. Well arranged and carried out, so glad I found out about it!!
  • There's no wind, despite the name but our guide was very thorough in explaining us all about magma and how this tunnels were formed. We explored the 2nd level, if I'm not wrong, and it was both instructive and adventurous. Unlike a usual day at the beach you'll bring something priceless away with you. Would I recommend to pass a half a day here? Absolutely yes.
