Parroquia Jesus de Medinaceli, Madrid

4.3
View a historically significant 17th-century statue of Jesus at Parroquia Jesus de Medinaceli, a Baroque-style Catholic church. Enter the elegant cathedral and climb the stairs to view the statue, created by artists in the School of Sevilla and originally transported to a Spanish fortress in Morocco. The piece was then captured by the Moors, ransomed by Trinitarian monks, and delivered to the church in 1682, where people now go to pray to its image. Many kiss the statue's feet after praying (and an employee dutifully wipes the surface after each kiss). • It seemed that every time we went by, there was a mass in progress so we only peeked through the the glass in the doors. The interior looked really beautiful but we did not manage to get a good look.  more »

  • I chose this particular church for the Vigil on a Saturday evening I had never been to Madrid, so this was my first encounter with a Catholic Church in the capital. I loved everything about the church, but I was especially struck by the immense devotion of the parishioners for the statue of Jesus high up behind the altar! Very impressive was the number if volunteers present. I was also pleased when the priest welcomed all tourists. He made us feel so at home!! Thank you
  • I came into the church almost by accident and ended up in a line to see the altar very much by accident. I'm glad to have seen it even if I wasn't sure what I was seeing.
