Explore at least a few of the 2,000 lavishly decorated rooms of the historic Royal Palace of Madrid, considered one of the finest buildings in the city. Take the grand stairway to discover the state rooms, noted for their detailed tapestries, frescoes, porcelain, carvings, china, and silverware. The courtyard connects to both the old pharmacy, which holds hundreds of bottles of centuries-old medicines, and the royal armory, a two-level exhibit of medieval weapons and armor. Although the enormous palace is the official residence of the King, the royal family doesn’t actually live here; the site is generally used for state ceremonies. Avoid visiting on Wednesdays, when entry is free and the lines are extremely long. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Madrid holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Royal Palace of Madrid and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

10 euros per person with children under 5 going free. Yes it is free for the last couple of hours in the day but the queues go on for miles and my holiday time is too precious for the time in the queues. Some wonderful opulent rooms in the palace. The throne room was my favourite with the 2 thrones surrounded by golden lions. Example of some of the finest works in Europe in each of the palaces rooms. The most extravagant place I have ever visited. Well worth the visit I will never forget my trip hear.

Beautiful palace and so so opulent! It was interesting to learn all about the history of the various monarchy that lived in the palace. The armoury is a treat for the little ones. Staff were friendly and super helpful. Getting the audio guide for €3 was worth it. They do not allow photo taking of most of the exhibits though, so do take note of that.
