Catedral de Segovia, Segovia

4.4
Wherever you wander around town, the towering 16th-century Gothic style Catedral de Segovia looms above you. You should have no problems finding plenty of angles from which to photograph it. As you wander the building's perimeter, check out the sculpture of the Virgin Mary on the main facade. Once inside, take your time to appreciate the high vaults, dome, stained glass windows, and many paintings and sculptures. Head into the archive to see “The Synod of Aguilafuente,” the first book printed in Spain. The massive tower is only accessible with special permission from the cathedral's administrators, so don’t expect views. Put Catedral de Segovia and other Segovia attractions into our Segovia tour planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Impressive, but if I am very struck by why you had to pass the entrance to this religious precinct, that part I do NOT understand.

  • Consecrated to the Assumption and San Frutos, the design of this cathedral is by the Cantabrian master Juan Gil de Hontañón. From the time the first stone was laid to its consecration, 243 years passed. Although it is considered the last Gothic-style cathedral built in Spain, it is a mixture of styles, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical. It is OBLIGED to enter, not only admire its beauty from the outside, see the 22 chapels, some more interesting than others, their carvings, we can see works by artists such as Juan de Juni, Gregorio Fernandez, Benson... admire the beautiful vines, which fill the interior of it with light, the main altar... From the cloister of the cathedral you can go to the Chapter Hall (former meeting room of the Cabildo Catedral, in which the coffered of the sixteenth century stands out), the Room of Tapestry and Liturgical Ornaments, (located above the Chapter Room in which stands out a collection of tapestries, called "Los Planetas", woven during the sixteenth century in Brussels), the Exhibition Hall of Santa Catalina (with works of great artistic and religious value) and the Room under the Calustro (with Flemish and Castilian pictorial works of high artistic and religious value). General admission from children aged 10 years to 65 costs 3 euros. If you say it seems a little abusive that children 10 years old pay like an adult. They're not teenagers. This way you get away from the children, who at that price seem to be annoying and families with 2 children, also take them away, because if there are three to the whole family the reduced rate is applied. I don't object to paying because it's a way to pay expenses, but for children to pay like an adult is a robbery. If you opt for a guided tour of the Tower that is accessed from the cathedral itself is 7 euros. I can't comment on the tower because we don't go up. That's if everyone from 6 years of age is included. Even with all that I repeat that it is a must visit, going to Segovia and not going inside is like seeing a picture of it from home.

  • I’ll be honest... I didn’t go inside this cathedral but I give it a solid 5 stars for how beautiful the exterior is! There is a plaza right next to it with dining options that include outside seating. Perfect opportunity to enjoy the beauty of this architecture and some good food!
  • Very pretty cathedral. The tower and the views from the top of it, are reason enough to visit it. Definitely one of the prettiest cathedrals from our trip. The only huge downside is the amount of tourists. It was so crowded it just got annoying after a while. Going up the tower took forever and felt like being stuck in a traffic jam. They should really limit the amount of people per day
