The centerpiece of the city and one of only three High Gothic cathedrals in the country, Catedral Primada was constructed using white limestone brought here from numerous quarries in the surrounding area. For many visitors, the highlight is the sacristy, with its impressive gallery packed with paintings by El Greco, Caravaggio, Titian, Rafael, Zurbarán, and Velázquez. Begun in 1226 on the site of an ancient mosque, the imposing building was modeled after the Bourges Cathedral in France. Its monumental interior features heavy columns dividing the space into five naves, with several side chapels containing exquisite gold reliefs, huge oil paintings, and portraits of cardinals going back at least 500 years. Photography is strictly forbidden inside, though you can access the bell tower to snap a few shots of the historic city center. Catedral Primada Reviews
Definitely a must see in Toledo, this Cathedral is huge, and one of the oldest on Spain. The interior is absolutely exquisite! more »
You can easily spend over 2 hours in this cathedral. The audio tour that comes with the entrance fee is very well done. Giving you interesting information while not being too extensive. We have been i... more »
A very rare 5 star review. One of the very best religious monuments I've ever been too. The Cathedral is large with many very different and unique features not found anywhere else in the world. The detail of the art and architectural work is fantastic. It's rare to want to spend 2 hours in a church! The tickets are bought outside and you get a free audio/video guide which is great. I wasn't offered a tower ticket. Don't know if I've missed something else?? Worth a visit to Toledo just for this, although it's a lovely city.
It’s always a bit off putting to be charged to enter a Catholic Church especially if you’re in a group - the cost adds up pretty quickly. The most frustrating part was that we purchased the ticket climb and were not advised that you weren’t able to climb to the top of the tower as construction work was underway so you end up in a bell tower with zero views of the surrounds. The cathedral itself is magnificent.. no doubt and I just hope your entry fee contributes to getting you closer to heaven.
