Sandy Bay, Jamestown

#1 of 6 in Nature in St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha
Water Body · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Best reached by car, Sandy Bay offers striking black volcanic sand that lure visitors, but don't plan to swim here. Because of the strong undercurrents, swimming is strongly discouraged. Instead, utilize the beach for picnics and barbecues, take photos of nesting turtles in the area, or explore the farmed upper reaches where coffee and bananas are grown. Locals use the site for fishing from the rocks. Visit old, restored fortifications nearby. If you're set on swimming, ask for directions to Lot's Wife's Ponds, where you can safely take a dip.
