Jim Thompson House, Bangkok

4.2
#1 of 309 in Museums in Thailand
Admire the artful curation of traditional Thai design at Jim Thompson House, a complex of buildings collected from across the country in the 1950s and 60s. The brainchild of American businessman Jim Thompson, this estate brings together classic architectural examples in one place and today offers an interesting introduction into traditional Thai arts and crafts, such as silk spinning. Relax under the verandas of the cool, rust-colored buildings, and admire the work of local craftspeople before enjoying a meal at the onsite restaurant. • Being an American who lived 30 minutes from his home town really marked me. The Jim Thompson House inspired me to keep following my dreams of becoming a Thailand citizen. I feel that we both see and love the culture here. I loved his story. I loved the uniqueness of the house and the old pieces he collected. If you love art, this is something to see for sure! Highly recommended. The staff are friendly, approachable and social! I had a really great experience with Beifern, a Thai dancer and silk maker. She deserves to be recognized for her hard work and how she treats the tourists; she made it very personal and a special experience. I will never forget this place. Amazing experience and beauty. Thank you Jim Thompson💝💫
  • Pretty grounds with nice small gardens. Not sure it's worth any far travelling but if you're in the area it's worth a visit. Free tour included with very reasonably priced ticket--150baht/person. Our guide was exceptional and offered interesting facts about the home and Jim Thompson's life.
  • I loved the story and I loved the place. Upgrading local housing to very comfortable Western life styke is interesting story of Western cultures. The art collection was beautiful and the nice garden and location on the canal gave it a dream flavor. The guide spoke good enough English to be able to tell the story, but not enough to answer some of iur questions that were off her lines. We visited the shop and the items there are beautiful. There is a cafe \ restaurant but we didn't go in.
  • A worth visiting heritage house with unique combination of mainly Thai style building and oriental furniture, antique collection and exquisite architectal structure. Had it not been that the owner is a passionate architect himself, it is unlikely we would be able to see such a sanctuary built by a westerner (an American) in downtown Bangkok today. The visiting experience to this museum is certainly very much enhanced by the museum tour guide. Quite busy on a Monday afternoon but the tour groups are well organised to make sure each group not too big with enough time for each individual to spend time on the items of his or her interest.
  • Worth a visit! Nice atmosphere inside the museum. The restaurant is by the cannel and has tasty food, the well known Thai silk shop just right at the front..no need to go anywhere far for top quality silk
