Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Doi Suthep

Climb the 309 steps up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a sacred Buddhist temple set on top of a mountain overlooking Chiang Mai. Take in extensive views of the city below before admiring the impressive artistry of the temple's main buildings and decorative flourishes. Said to have been established in the late 14th century, this well-maintained place of worship remains the subject of many myths and legends, with the truth of its construction and development still a mystery. • Located outside of Chiang Mai city, approximately 45 minutes drive from city and you will need to drive up to the steep and curvy road. You may park the vehicle at the open car park which is opposite ...  more »

  • Talk about an unrecognized wonder of the world. This temple is incredible and packed full of tourists. There are a lot of stairs leading up to it so be read for a long hot walk. Also the drive up is about 40 minutes. If you get a red taxi make sure it’s not packed because people get car sick on the way up. Be sure to wear pants and sleeves too.
  • This place is pretty amazing. If you are in Chiang Mai I would say that this place is a must see. Just please respect local customs when it comes to behavior and chothing. Also bring a good camera, the going to want it. Also if you are physically able, skip the elevator and take the stairs. There are a number of good things to see in the way up.
  • There is 326 steps to walk up to the temple from the road. The entrance fee for tourist is 30 Baht. It is a big complex with many monument , temple , shops and halls. Alow at least 2 hours to walk around. We went in to a prayer hall and were sprinkled with water by a Monk as we receive a blessing. There is also a giant gong hanging outside in the garden.
  • We rented a motor bike for the day. Used out international drivers license to get up to the mountain. It we a great adventure. Fill up before you leave or pray too much for gas at the top. There is tons of stuff to eat at buy at the top. The temple is beautiful, but you have plenty of comments from others to read about that.
  • It is a sacred place to many Thai people. Observe silence and follow rules. Use proper outfit to avoid paying extra aside from the entrance fee. Pants and shirt without showing your belly button will do. 😀
