The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Appreciate the collections at NH Galeria and Arte Getsemani. San Felipe de Barajas Castle and Walled City of Cartagena will appeal to history buffs. Take a break from Cartagena with a short trip to Aviario Nacional de Colombia in Isla Baru, about 50 minutes away. There's still lots to do: look for gifts at Dantas Store, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ermita Nuestra Senora De La Candelaria, don't miss a visit to Plaza de San Diego, and browse for treasures at Anticuario El Arcon.

Kick off your visit on the 5th (Fri): make a trip to Capilla de Santa Barbara, get to know the fascinating history of Camino Real, explore the different monuments and memorials at Cementerio Barichara, view the masterpieces at Fundacion San Lorenzo De Barichara, then explore the world behind art at Casa de la Cultura Emiliano Pradilla Gonzalez, and finally pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepcion.

Start off your visit on the 6th (Sat): get engrossed in the history at Casa Museo Quinta de Bolivar, explore the world behind art at Museo Botero del Banco de la Republica, and then examine the collection at Gold Museum (Museo del Oro).
