The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Step off the beaten path and head to Barrio Getsemani and Speed Boats Tours. Your inner history buff will appreciate Iglesia de la Trinidad and Walled City of Cartagena. When in Cartagena, make a side trip to see Aviario Nacional de Colombia in Isla Baru, approximately Isla Baru away. There's much more to do: see the interesting displays at Choco Museo, take in the pleasant sights at Plazoleta de Blas de Lezo, make a trip to Plaza de San Diego, and look for gifts at Dantas Store.
