Capital of the Inca Empire for three centuries, World Heritage-listed Cusco is now a major tourist destination, drawing nearly 2 million annual tourists with its well-preserved colonial architecture and proximity to Machu Picchu.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Spas & Wellness and Sacred Valley of the Incas. Get some historical perspective at Sacsayhuaman and Plaza de Armas. There's lots more to do: identify plant and animal life at Santuario Animal de Cochahuasi, get engrossed in the history at Museo Inka, see the interesting displays at Planetarium Cusco, and get to know the fascinating history of San Blas.

Buenos Aires, Argentina to Cusco is an approximately 10-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. The time zone changes from Argentine Time (ART) to Peru Time (PET), which is usually a -2 hour difference. While traveling from Buenos Aires, expect slightly colder days and colder nights in Cusco, ranging from highs of 22°C to lows of 9°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 5th (Sat) early enough to travel to Machu Picchu.

A symbol of the Incan civilization, the abandoned city of Machu Picchu represents a must-see on a Peru vacation.
Kick off your visit on the 5th (Sat): examine the collection at Museo de Sitio Manuel Chavez Ballon and then look for all kinds of wild species at Jardin Botanico en Machu Pichu. Keep things going the next day: delve into the distant past at Intipuncu and then steep yourself in history at Machu Picchu.

You can take a train from Cusco to Machu Picchu in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 7th (Mon) early enough to take a train to Ollantaytambo.

Retaining much of its centuries-old architecture, Ollantaytambo represents one of the world's finest examples of Incan city planning.
Kick off your visit on the 7th (Mon): relax in the rural setting at El Albergue Farm, then relax and float downstream with a rafting and tubing tour, then delve into the distant past at Choqana, and finally pause for some serene contemplation at Iglesia de Santiago Apostol. On the 8th (Tue), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: steep yourself in history at Inka Pintay, delve into the distant past at Naupa Iglesia, then steep yourself in history at Moray, then snap pictures at Inca Bridge, and finally explore the ancient world of Pumamarca Ruins.

Getting from Machu Picchu to Ollantaytambo by train takes about 2 hours. Other options: drive. In January, plan for daily highs up to 22°C, and evening lows to 9°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 9th (Wed) early enough to drive to Urubamba.

Urubamba

The largest town in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Urubamba represents a transport hub, often frequented by tourists wanting to get out and see the ruins and natural sights of the valley.
Kick off your visit on the 9th (Wed): relax and rejuvenate at some of the top local wellness centers and then examine the collection at Museo Inkariy. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: see the sights as you ascend with a climbing tour, then indulge your thirst for a good beer at Cerveceria del Valle Sagrado, and then admire the striking features of Iglesia San Martin de Tours.

Urubamba is just a short distance from Ollantaytambo. In January in Urubamba, expect temperatures between 22°C during the day and 9°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Fri) to allow enough time to travel to Puerto Maldonado.

Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel to Arequipa.
