The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Aviario Nacional de Colombia and Plaza de San Diego. When in Cartagena, make a side trip to see Playa Blanca in Isla Baru, approximately Isla Baru away. Next up on the itinerary: race across the water with a speed boat tour, don't miss a visit to Plaza de La Trinidad, examine the collection at Choco Museo, and pause for some serene contemplation at Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver.

Many visitors begin their Santa Marta holiday, surrounded by urban clutter and heavy traffic, expecting little from the city in terms of historical importance.
Step off the beaten path and head to Scuba & Snorkeling and Cristal Beach. Change things up with a short trip to Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona in Tayrona National Park (about 1h 10 min away). Start off your visit on the 10th (Wed): enjoy the sea views from Lighthouse Providence, step off the mainland to explore Crab Cay-Cayo Cangrejo, and then make a trip to The Peak Forestry Reserve.
