Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Catedral del Espiritu Santo and La Ermita de la Concepcion (La Conquistadora). Appreciate the collections at XULIK Parque Museo and Lxkik Maya Museum. Change things up with these side-trips from Quetzaltenango: Parque Ecologico Chuiraxamolo (in Santa Clara La Laguna), San Andres Xecul (in Totonicapan) and Tak'alik Ab'aj (in El Asintal). There's lots more to do: take in the dramatic natural features at Fuentes Georginas, stop by Yabal Handicrafts, admire the striking features of Teatro Municipal de Quetzaltenango, and get impressive views of Santa Maria Volcano.

Getting from Flores to Quetzaltenango by combination of flight and shuttle takes about 7.5 hours. Other options: take a shuttle; or drive. When traveling from Flores in October, plan for little chillier days in Quetzaltenango, with highs around 70°F, while nights are cooler with lows around 50°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Mon) early enough to catch the shuttle to Panajachel.

Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Colonial Church and Iximche. Appreciate the collections at Hotel Posada de Don Rodrigo Museum and Tzunun' Ya'. Take a break from Panajachel with a short trip to Iglesia Catolica de San Juan La Laguna in San Juan la Laguna, about 1h 10 min away. There's still lots to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Church of St Francis, see the interesting displays at AviMuseo de Arte de Atitlan, make a trip to Pintando Santa Catarina Palopo, and contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Atitlan.
